Russian coated steel market research
The research conducted in 2014 by Metal Expert analyzes a competitive environment of Russian coated steel market, evaluates its regional and industrial structure.
Russia’s apparent consumption of coated steel products has been steadily growing in recent years. In 2013, consumption of HDG increased by 5% y-o-y to over 3.2 million t, of PPGI – by 2% y-o-y to nearly 2.4 million t.
The growth of HDG segment has been driven by industrial and individual construction. Central Federal District has accounted for 40% of total consumption.
The most demanded product is 0.55-1.55 mm steel with zinc coating <140 g/sq m.
Producers of shapes, pipes, steel structures and traders account for 75% of HDG purchases.
The growth of PPGI consumption has been accompanied by a continuing improvement of self-sufficiency. In 2013, domestic products accounted for 70% of consumption. The region’s largest consumer of PPGI is Central Federal District (40-50% of total market).
The most demanded PPGI is 0.3-05 mm thick, with zinc coating <140 g/sq m.
Producers of shapes and processors account for nearly 60% of PPGI consumption. Direct shipments to end-users (household appliances producers, machine-builders and carmakers) are insignificant, some 1-2% to each of the above.
A shortage of coated steel capacities will encourage their expansion, but commissioning of new equipment will slow down in 2015-2020. According to our estimates, by 2020 HDG and PPGI capacities will amount to 6 million tpy and 2.8 million tpy respectively.
