Outlook research concerning steelmakers based in Urals region of Russia
The research subject is ferrous steel producers based in Chelyabinsk and Sverdlovsk regions, major metallurgical centres of the country.
The works include analysis of the key regional producers’ business: current production capacities and the rate of their utilization, the product range, sales destinations. Competitive environment has been analyzed as well, the companies’ strengths and threats they are facing have been identified and evaluated, their prospects have been assessed.
Now, the Urals region is estimated to account for:
- 37% of steel output;
- 36% of steel product output;
- 36% of pipe output (including 65% of seamless pipe output).
In the medium term, steelmakers from Chelyabinsk and Sverdlovsk regions plan to implement a number of investment projects.
These projects will account for 3.5 mt of 13.7 mt that the total steel production capacity is expected to add in Russia by 2015.
The biggest capacity increase will likely be detected in the segment for semis: square billet and slab.
Investment activity in the segment for steel pipes will be low in the Urals region in the period under review. Only one pipe project has been announced there by now, for production renovation at Seversky Tube Works (launch of a 600,000 tpy seamless pipe mill in 2014). After the mill reaches the nameplate capacity, the Pilger mill will be stopped, and the total seamless pipe production capacity will come up by 220,000 t.
Metal Expert Consulting forecasts longs and flats output in the Urals region of Russia to grow at about 3.9% and 3.4% per year respectively in 2013-2015. Pipe production is expected to stay substantially unchanged.
